Cybersecurity Student at KIEP Skies Bootcamp
My name is Agnes Anyango. I am currently awaiting graduation from Egerton University from the Faculty of Law. I finished my undergraduate in April of 2024. I returned to Kisumu from Nakuru to reset. Prior to the bootcamp, I had been applying unsuccessfully for internships in law firms. I saw the opportunity to apply for the bootcamp and grabbed it. The online application was very vigorous as it included questions such as the reason for applying for the bootcamp, a motivation letter, and submission of personal documents such as an identity card. The follow-up physical interview was very vigorous and competitive. It included an examination to assess our capabilities, followed by a personal interview session with one of the FabLab mentors. Upon completion of the interview process, we were notified of our results via e-mail.
The cybersecurity bootcamp has been nothing short of an amazing experience. Some of the skills I have acquired include: pentesting, digital forensics, networking, financial literacy, ethical hacking among others. When I first joined the bootcamp, I had very little experience about the functioning of computers. However, with consistent practice and direction from our mentors, I have been able to harness and improve my skills. I hope to branch into Governance, Risk and Compliance which deals with enacting policies for start-ups and companies in terms of healthy cyber-hygiene practices. Developing our Capstone project was very interesting as we got to design customized solutions for cybersecurity challenges such as online financial fraud and lack of awareness. Working in groups made the entire process easier as every group member had a role to play. I however, faced a few challenges such as inadequate laptops as we were sharing with the others from the Data Analytics bootcamp. This in turn means that I had a very short time to practice the concepts taught by the mentors. I have created networks with students from other disciplines such as IT and Communication.
