Cybersecurity Student at KIEP Skies Bootcamp

My name is Genesis Otuche. I have had the incredible opportunity to participate in the bootcamp. As someone deeply interested in cybersecurity, this bootcamp has been the perfect platform to sharpen my skills and gain hands-on experience. The program aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the fast-evolving field of cybersecurity. One of the key challenges I faced during the bootcamp was grasping some of the more complex cybersecurity concepts, especially in areas like ethical hacking and penetration testing. Since I was new to many of these topics, it took extra effort to understand and apply them. Limited access to advanced computing tools also made the practical sessions challenging at first. However, by collaborating with my peers and tutors (Mr. Charles otieno and Prof Dr. David Njoga), sharing resources, and putting in extra time, I was able to overcome these obstacles During the first phase, I gained a solid foundation in cybersecurity principles, which set the stage for more advanced learning. The second phase was where I truly got to immerse myself in the practical aspects of cybersecurity. I worked with tools like Wireshark and Kali Linux, and got hands-on experience in hacking simulations, vulnerability assessments and incident response. In the final phase, I have had a chance to work on a team project where we are developing a cybersecurity solution to a real-world problem. This experience has not only been rewarding but has also helped me apply everything I have learned.

Towards the end of the bootcamp training, I am noticing a significant improvement in my cybersecurity knowledge and I feel more confident in my abilities to handle cybersecurity tasks. Additionally, I’ve already started applying the skills I gained in personal projects contributing to cybersecurity awareness within my network. I am grateful to the administration, SKIES, KIEPS and FABLAB WINAM for having awarded me this competitive opportunity and for their unwavering support throughout the program. I am open to consideration for future opportunities to further expand my expertise and contribute to the growing field of cybersecurity
